This page tells you how to set up your computer to send and receive email
from your bssr.org.uk email account.
How difficult is it to set up?
Configuring your email software on your home P.C. should be fairly easy, and take you less than
10
minutes to complete. I suggest you print this page and follow the step by step
instructions below.
If you wish to send and receive email at work, you may need to
contact your local IT or network office for assistance. All the information
required is included in this page. Your hospital mail server must support POP3
and SMTP mail server protocols. If your hospital is using X400 mail servers, you may want me to
arrange to have your society email automatically forwarded to your hospital email address.
This is explained next.
Can you forward my email to my current email address?
Yes. This is an option when you request your society email account. If you choose this
option, you do not need to configure your computer, and can skip the rest of
these instructions.
The limitation of this method is that you will only be able to receive
mail from your society account. When replying to messages and sending new mail,
your outgoing email will be seen as coming from your current email address. To send mail from your
society address, you will have to configure your email software as detailed
below.
What software can I use?
There are lots of different e-mail clients available that support our POP3
and SMTP mail servers. We recommend that you use Microsoft Outlook supplied with
Microsoft Office, or Microsoft Outlook Express a free e-mail client supplied
with Windows and Internet Explorer. The free version can also be download from www.microsoft.com.
How do I configure my software?

To send and receive mail you must configure your software following the
procedure below...
The instructions and diagrams provided are for Microsoft Outlook Express, but
can equally be applied to Microsoft Outlook. Other email client software has
similar set up procedures.
First you must open Microsoft Outlook Express and click on the Tools option from
the menu bar. Now click on the Accounts option within the Tools menu, which will
open the internet accounts window. Select Add and choose Mail. Here you will be
asked to chose your display name, as it will appear in outgoing emails.

You will then be asked your email address (which I supplied you with following
your request) i.e. your_name@bssr.org.uk. This will be displayed in outgoing messages and enables
people to reply to you with the reply button.
Once you have entered your Display Name and Email address, you will be
presented with a screen for setting up Outlook with your e-mail server.
Make sure your incoming e-mail server is a POP3 server or it will not work
correctly.

Next you need to tell Outlook Express about the e-mail servers for sending and
receiving e-mails. Simply enter in the Incoming e-mail server field the
following:-
mail.bssr.org.uk
Now enter your internet service provider's (ISP's) outgoing mail server name in
the outgoing mail server field:-
For example mail.btinternet.com
Your ISP is the company or organisation that provides you access to email and
the internet. This may be a commercial company e.g.. Freeserve or BTinternet, or
your own trust hospital. Your ISP will be able to provide you with this
information if you do not have it already.
Now click on Next to take you to the Mail Logon Screen. Here you will be
asked for your username and password that I supplied to you when I set up your
BSSR account. Please note you should not enter your member username and password
which will be different.
Make sure you type both your username and password correctly (including the case
of the letters) as you will not be able to retrieve your e-mail otherwise.

Now you need to configure Outlook Express to the correct type of
connection that you are currently using on your computer. The options available
are
Connect using a LAN (Local Area Network)
Connect Using a Phoneline
I will establish a Connection Manually |
If your internet connection is through is provided through a network (e.g. at
work) select LAN. At home, if you already have Internet Explorer configured to
access the internet, choose the Manual option as this will use your default
Internet Explorer settings. If you have no dial up connection established,
choose the phone line option and you will be taken through the set up process.
You can always change your settings later through the properties tab.
Once you have chosen, press the Next button and then the Finish button the
save your settings and exit the dialog. You are now ready to send and receive your
e-mails.
How do I receive mail?
Once you have configured your account, simply click on the Send/Receive
button to receive your mail. You will of course have to be connected to the
internet! You can set up Outlook to check your mail at regular intervals, but
this is not recommended unless you have a permanent internet connection.
How do I send mail?
If this is your only email account, simply click the Send or Send/Receive buttons
to send your mail. If you have multiple email accounts, you can select which one to send a message with. Outlook express also allows you to
choose which email account to use as the default when sending new email messages. You
may change your default settings using the accounts window you accessed during the
setup process.
Can I access my email through the website?
We do not currently provide facilities for accessing your email through the
website. If you prefer to view your mail in this way, I suggest you use a standard
web based mail service such as hotmail. You can configure hotmail to receive
mail from up to four POP3 accounts, such as your bssr.org.uk email account. The instructions are
listed under the options tab (when you are logged in to hotmail). Alternatively, I can
arrange for all your society email to be automatically forwarded for you.
Any Other Questions?
Please address any questions to me at the email address below, or through the
website support section on the discussion boards.
